Skin Care In The Sun
Sun Block
"I can't stress prevention enough: it's everything", says Tim Heffernan, MD, a Seattle-based ophthalmic
plastic surgeon, about using sun block. "Chronic sun exposure hinders elastin production, resulting in saggy,
lackluster skin." The sun's damaging ultraviolet rays, even in indirect sunlight, produce free radicals that
deplete collagen resources and contribute to photo aging and skin cancer. To prevent subsequent wrinkles,
sun spots, discoloration and fine lines, Doctor Heffernan advices that everyone, regardless of age and previous
sun exposure, protect themselves. "Use sun block that contains a high SPF to defend against UVA rays."

UVB Rays
UVB exposure contributes to redness of a sunburn and causes a thickening of the skin as well as sun spots and basal cell carcinoma.
UVA Rays
There are about 20 times more UVA rays, than there are UVB rays,
and UVA rays are most responsible for the DNA damage that leads to
the visible of aging and a tanned appearance.
Prevent Sun Damage
We get approximately 80% of our lives' sun exposure by age 25.
But, on most photos damage doesn't start showing up until the 40s
when treatments to reduce its appearance can only do so much.
Two Types Of Sunscreen
Chemical (aka organic filters). These rely on synthetic compounds as the active ingredients
and absorb the UVA rays while helping to deflect the UVB rays.
Physical(aka inorganic filters). Extremely fine particles of minerals stay on the
skin's surface and create a barrier that reflects UVB rays.
Age Spots
Sometimes called liver spots or sun spots, these age related freckles are caused by
increased activity of the pigment-producing melanocytes in our skin. Sun exposure
accelerates the production of pigment, as can your diet, oral contraceptives
and hormone replacement therapy.
Crow's Feet
Did you know crow's feet can be prevented? Diligent use of sunscreen, eye cream and
even Botox can help maintain the appearance of your eye area, and keep
them young looking for years to come.
