The Life Of Your Skin

We have discussed how hormones can affect your skin, both positively and negatively. Hormones change, not only with infrequent (although major) events like pregnancy, but ebb and flow through the years as you age, and affect the body and skin accordingly. Other factors, both internal and external, determine the health and appearance of our skin and body. Some things we can prevent (like how much sun exposure we get) and some we can't (like how much oil our skin produces), but at least what we can't prevent, we can usually do something about if we want to!
If you are interested in taking care of your appearance (and if you are reading this, you probably are), here is what you need to know about how your skin ages and what to do about it. If you take care of your skin from your twenties onward, your skin will stay in shape – just as your body does when you take good care of it.
So, here's to the life of your skin!

The Shape of Your Twenties

Your skin is in the best shape during these years of good production of collagen and elastin, which keep skin strong, firm, and flexible. The oil and moisture in your skin are well balanced, and you have excellent circulation throughout your body, including your skin. The skin on your face and body is, for the most part, smooth. Although you may tend to break out (especially around your menstrual cycle), and your skin may still be quite oily, it's not quite as bad as the pimples you got during the hormonally charged teen years. You may show tiny lines around your eyes, but most women in their twenties have skin that looks healthy and young. Despite the good state of your skin, you still need to watch out for beauty burglars, such as the sun, smoking, alcohol, and high-dosage birth control pills, which can cause adult acne breakouts, as opposed to lower-dose pills, which can actually help clear your complexion.
Your Skin Shape-Up Program
  • Wash twice a day with an antibacterial cleanser if you are very oily. Otherwise, stick to a gentle cleanser
  • Zap any zits that pop up with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide
  • Use an alpha hydroxyl acid product (such as glycolic acid) daily
  • Use an oil-free moisturized with a minimum SFP of 15 (such as Purpose or Neutrogena)
  • Use a higher SPF if you will be outdoors for anything more than 15 minutes. Start making sun protection a part of your life now and enjoy the healthy and beautiful results for the rest of your life
  • Start another lifelong habit: along with monthly breast self-exams, do a monthly skin check. Get familiar with your freckles and spots so you will be the first to notice if something changes or is new

The Shape of Your Thirties

These years signal significant changes in your complexion. As you produce less oil, your skin becomes drier and scalier. Your nails may start to peel and crack as well. The accumulation of sun damage can begin to crop up in the form of fine wrinkles (especially in the crow's-feet area). Because your skin cell turnover is slower, you may begin to look slightly pasty, with less of a rosy glow. You may also start noticing age spots and other pigment discolorations. Your hair may start getting grayer and thinner; if thinning is severe, you might consider using Rogaine. You probably can't party the way you did in your twenties without sagging skin and dark circles under your eyes in the morning. Now, before you turn 35, is the time to start building bone mass to prevent osteoporosis, the brittle-bone disease. Increase any weight-bearing exercises you do (running, walking, working out with weights, jumping rope, etc.) and get enough calcium in your diet from dairy foods. Pregnancy may leave you with, among other things, spider veins and weight gain.
Your Skin Shape-Up Program
  • Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt without stripping your skin of moisture
  • Skip toners (they're too drying)
  • Use a bread-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen every day
  • Start using a vitamin A derivative product to reduce sun damage and to speed cell turnover, and perhaps a vitamin C product. The antioxidants in vitamins A and C attack free radicals, which cause aging
  • Use a cream that contains alpha hydroxyl acids daily and start a program of facial peels, either glycolic, fruit acid, or microdermabrasion, to help the skin stay toned and youthful
  • Take a good look in the mirror – it's probably time to start Botox for those fine lines and wrinkles forming around your eyes
  • Take another step toward lifelong health and start visiting your dermatologist for yearly skin exams. Early detection of skin cancers and other problems is so important

The Shape of Your Forties

Your skin is getting drier and finer with the years, as sebum production slows down. This is good news if you've always had oily skin – now it's much less oily. By your forties you may notice increased lines and wrinkles on your face and hands. You may notice sagging at your jowls, neck, brows, and eyes due to loss of skin elasticity. Your hair is also getting lighter in pigment and shrinking in diameter, so it looks (and is) finer. The texture may also change. Some women even start to notice thinning at the temples by the time they turn 45. That postpregnancy fat and spider veins may still be around; in these and other ways you may think you're starting to look like your mother!
Your Skin Shape-Up Program
  • Use moisturizing products and broad-spectrum sunscreens daily
  • Continue with alpha-hydroxy acid and vitamin A products (such as Retin-A)
  • Avoid falling victim to the cosmetic counter salesperson's pitch for the latest "miracle in a jar". Your skin regimen doesn't have to be elaborate or even expensive to be effective
  • Liposuction of excess fat (on the neck, abdomen, legs, arms, almost anywhere) is a good option now; on the one hand, your metabolism is slowing, so you may not “burn off” those extra pounds on your own, but your skin still has good elasticity and will retract beautifully once the protruding fat is removed
  • Chemical peels and laser resurfacing can clear away many surface blemishes, blotches, and fine lines, and the skin still has good healing capabilities now
  • Consider Botox and/or collagen (or other filler substances) for facial lines and wrinkles if you haven't become a fan already

The Shape of Your Fifties, Sixties, and Beyond

During these years your oil glands produce much less oil, less even than 10 years ago, making your entire body, face, and even scalp drier and flakier. You may start to notice more facial hair, especially around your chin and cheeks, which can be a reaction to the estrogen drop of menopause. You may start to suffer from hair loss. You may notice your body fat increasing as your metabolism slows down even further and you also need to eat fewer calories to maintain your present weight. If you are (and I hope you are) a healthy and active person, your appearance may start to bother you if you think you should look as young as you feel.
Your Skin Shape-Up Program
  • Try using moisturizers that contain urea, lactic acid, and ammonium lactate to seal in moisture
  • Continue all the good habits that are hopefully second nature by now: daily use of sunscreen, alpha-hydroxy acid, and vitamin A products, and regular skin checks by yourself and your dermatologist
  • It's never too late to start facial treatments and Botox!
  • Bleach facial hair or remove unwanted hair permanently with laser or electrolysis treatments
  • If you put off plastic surgery procedures before because you thought you were “too young,” consider them now for areas that bother you, while you are young enough to enjoy the results! A blepharoplasty (eye job) is a relatively easy procedure with dramatic results, and of course a complete face-lift takes years off your appearance
  • Don't forget the basics – continue to eat a balanced diet and get enough exercise, rest, and regular medical screenings
